Wellness Diaries: Sigourney Cantelo

We recently caught up with Sigourney Cantelo for our Wellness Diaries.

Sigourney was a beauty and health director working in glossy magazines for many years, but felt confused and intimidated by all the conflicting information in the beauty industry and the endless products she was required to try!

She made it her mission to demystify the beauty game and tell stories of the real people and products that really make an impact. So, her business Beauticate was born (a fusion of Beautify and Educate).

We caught up with Sigourney at home, to hear all about what wellness means to her!

Wellness to me is about making sure you’ve got the four pillars in check: nutrition, exercise, sleep and mindset.

It’s also about using science-based tools to help our bodies perform optimally.

Biohacking is a trending word, but we know there’s so much science behind how the body responds to extreme heat, cold, light and different nutritional supplements and minerals… it makes sense to use these things if we have the tools at our fingertips. Knowledge is power!

I’m a stickler for lighting - I replaced all the light globes in our house with amber or warm lights to help support the circadian rhythm. Studies also show that red light can also help with everything from acne to wound-healing and even mitochondrial function.

I firmly believe in the importance of self-care, and rituals that help us shift into the parasympathetic state. Things like breathwork, meditation, even a mindful moment with your skincare is taking time out to nurture yourself.

For me, skincare has to be fast because I have a business and kids - mine is serum, oil, moisturiser and I’m out the door!

We know now how important the gut is for every single system in our body. The key to getting that really populous microflora is to introduce as many different plants in a week. I try to get around 30 a week (this includes herbs and spices). I love to grow my own at home, and also use supplements!

I add a Probiotic for my gut health, plus Vitamin D and Fish Oil. I also take some for energy and brain health too… It's really just having a toolkit of supplements on hand to help my body perform at its best at all times.
