PRECONCEPTION HEALTH: Folic Acid helps prepare the body for pregnancy and, along with Zinc, maintains and supports preconception health. 

PREGNANCY: Folic Acid, Iodine, Vitamin D3 and Zinc support healthy foetal development and healthy pregnancy. Folic Acid and Iodine help maintain and support healthy foetal CNS/brain development. Folic Acid also helps to prevent neural tube defects such as spina bifida and/or anencephaly, when taken for at least four weeks before conception and during the first trimester of pregnancy.

MORNING SICKNESS: Pyridoxine decreases and relieves morning sickness. 

MATERNAL HEALTH: Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 and Iodine maintain and support maternal health.

Why we chose to include 400 mcg Folic Acid: Current public health advice is to supplement with 400 microgram Folic Acid per day, one month prior to conception and throughout the first three months of pregnancy in order to reduce the risk of having a baby with neural tube defects (NTD). Therefore, we have included Folic Acid at 400 micrograms in our formula. Additionally, we have included Levomefolic Acid (5-MTHF) and Folinic Acid at 100 micrograms to bring it to the maximum 500 micrograms dose per day of Folate in a listed medicine.

WARNINGS:

• Always read the label and follow the directions for use. WARNING - Stop taking this medication if you experience tingling, burning or numbness and see your healthcare practitioner as soon as possible. [Contains Vitamin B6]. Vitamins and minerals can only be of assistance if dietary intake is inadequate.

• This medicine contains Selenium which is toxic in high doses. A daily dose of 150 micrograms for adults of Selenium from dietary supplements should not be exceeded.

• Advise your doctor of any medicine you take during pregnancy, particularly in your first trimester. If you are concerned about the health of yourself or your baby, talk to your health practitioner.

More on Folic Acid: 

The 400 microgram dose of Folic Acid in our Prenatal+ formula is consistent with current public health advice to supplement with 400 micrograms of Folic Acid per day, one month prior to conception and throughout the first three months of pregnancy in order to reduce the risk of having a baby with neural tube defects (NTD). Although other forms of folates such as Levomefolic Acid (5-MTHF) and Folinic Acid are bioactive forms, neither have clinical trial evidence for reducing the risk of NTD and are not consistent with public health advice, which is for Folic acid only. We therefore use Folic Acid for both ethical and compliance reasons.

However, we do also include 100 micrograms of methylated folate (from 5-MTHF) and Folinic Acid in our formula, the maximum levels permitted, as folate supplementation from all sources must not exceed 500 micrograms per day in a listed medicine. As such our choice and dose of folates is governed by the regulations and is the only suitable option within these regulations for a multivitamin aimed at preconception and pregnancy.
