How to give your hair the best care

Hair is a complex structure made up of many parts with the purpose of protecting the scalp, but aside from the practicality of it, having healthy locks can help you feel fabulous! There are many factors that can impact your locks, from products and styling methods to nutrition. Here are our go-to ways to give your hair the best care possible (DIY avocado hair mask optional but recommended!).

Watch out for chemicals

Excessive or repeated exposure to chemical treatment, grooming habits and exposure to the environment can produce changes in hair texture and if extreme, can lead to hair breakage. These changes can be seen as ‘weathering’ of the hair shaft and ultimately contribute to tangling and frizzing. Weathering is classified as the gradual deterioration from the root to the tip of the hair. 

Ingredients to avoid in your hair care:

  • Parabens
  • Triclosan
  • Synthetic colours and dyes
  • Formaldehyde
  • Polyethylene glycol (PEGs)
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)
  • Phthalates
  • Dimethicone
  • Triethanolamine
  • Synthetic fragrances
  • Para-phenylenediamine (PPD)
  • Benzene
  • Alcohol

Heat Damage

After a heat treatment, hair may seem easier to comb through. However, after shampooing and removing the treatment, the hair dries out, exposing the damage caused by the excess heat. Even though using a hair dryer appliance causes more damage to the surface than natural drying does, using a hair dryer at a distance of 15cm with continual motion, leads to less damage.

DIY Nourishing Hair Mask

Ingredients:

1/2 Avocado, mashed

1 tbsp Olive Oil

1 tbsp Aloe Vera

2 tbsp Greek Yoghurt or Coconut Yoghurt

1 tbsp Honey

Method:

Apply mixture to damp hair. Leave on for 20 mins.
